I’m not usually big on superhero movies—at least, not enough to watch them in cinemas. I tend to wait until the hype dies down, catching them on TV or in near-empty theaters.
Fantastic Four has had three iterations in the 2000s, and while they were commercially successful, they never truly stood a chance against heavyweights like Spider-Man, X-Men, and, of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That said, First Steps might change that. The presentation looks incredible, evoking a similar vibe to The Incredibles. After years of dark and brooding superhero films, it’s refreshing to see a bright and vibrant take on the genre.
As for the cast, I have mixed feelings. The Thing looks great, and Vanessa Kirby seems like a solid choice for Sue Storm, but we’ll have to see how the performances play out. I’m not entirely sold on the decision to make Silver Surfer a woman, but I’m willing to give it a chance. More importantly, First Steps needs to establish its own identity—proving to audiences that it’s more than just a stepping stone for Robert Downey Jr.’s potential MCU return.
With that, here’s the trailer.
It looks fantastic.
