MPBL | MAHINAY'S 100K FINE

Germy Mahinay had a stint with the UST Growling Tigers.

His gameplay hasn't had a chance to turn heads.

Except now.

I have covered Rey Barcuma's gameplay through his years playing for the Perpetual Altas alongside Jielo Razon, Kim Aurin, Jeff Egan, and Mark Omega. Barcuma is a small shooting guard, making him a combo guard by default. I don't know if he has already exhausted his eligibility, but I'm happy that he stopped himself from joining the super-stacked 2023 PBA Draft.

With that said, Barcuma could have been between the third and fifth rounds.

But on second thought, I may have exaggerated his game because his numbers dipped in Season 99 - posting so-so averages of 1.9 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

Anyway, the MPBL just fined Mahinay for his very unsportsmanlike foul that caused the diminutive guard to crash and burn. Yes, 100k is hardly a fine given how Barcuma "defied" gravity with his fall, but I don't know if Mahinay can afford to pay that big of a fine. While yeah, Negros could help the big man pay off his MPBL debt, the next likely step for the team is to cut the player.

In terms of job security, the MPBL isn't like the PBA. A town can lose its backer - whether commercial or city government - depending on how it wants to use its budget. Most MPBL players, except for the more established teams like Pampanga and San Juan, are treated as hired guns that could play for multiple teams in a particular MPBL season. A banger like Mahinay is expendable, especially if he can't improve on his defensive skills.

Yes, using the knee to break another player's fall is not a good defensive quality.
