Luka Doncic helped the Dallas Mavericks subdue the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it's bittersweet.
I'm not too fond of this, because this leads to a Boston Celtics versus Kyrie Irving narrative.
With that said, I thought Luka should have won the MVP award.
The Mavs are the Western Conference champions, with Doncic winning the Magic Johnson Finals MVP award. But this is not the ultimate prize. I'm pretty sure, Luka knows this, but Michael Finley also knows this. Finley became a two-time All-Star and averaged 19.8 points for the Mavs, but was not able to win the title despite playing alongside Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash. In fact, during his run with the Mavs, the team had the likes of Jerry Stackhouse, Nick Van Exel, Tim Hardaway, Jason Terry, Keith Van Horn, Shawn Bradley, and for a brief time, Dennis Rodman. While he did win a title with the San Antonio Spurs, he only averaged 3.8 points and was relegated to a bench mob role.
So yeah, let Luka have all the beer he wants after the playoffs. If what he did is a teachable moment that the Western Finals isn't a thing to be that happy about, then I bet Luka gets what he did as well.
