LISTENING TO | AGSUNTA - MIDNIGHT SKY (UNIQUE COVER)

Let’s get one thing straight: Unique Salonga’s original is hauntingly beautiful. His vocal quality lends itself to a dreamy, introspective sound, and the minimalist approach works well for his artistic identity. However, for all its lyrical brilliance, "Midnight Sky" feels like it’s building toward something that never quite arrives. Its tonal consistency may be intentional—perhaps reflective of quiet introspection—but as a listener, it leaves me yearning for a more climactic conclusion.

This is where Agsunta's version stands out. They took the original's foundation and built a dynamic arc around it. By reimagining the arrangement, they gave the song the “oomph” it was missing, especially toward the end. It's as if Agsunta asked the same question many of us had: What if 'Midnight Sky' didn't just drift but soared?

That’s not to say Unique’s version isn’t superior in other ways. His vocal delivery is raw and distinctive, evoking a sense of vulnerability that’s hard to replicate.

Nothing beats the original, in some ways.

Also, I can't believe this song has been almost a decade now.

Ultimately, this cover isn’t about outshining Unique—it’s about offering an alternative vision for the song.

What’s your take? Do you prefer the minimalist melancholy of Unique or the explosive energy of Agsunta?
