Leylah Fernandez is now a popular figure in the world of tennis.
Just turning 19, she became the youngest player to defeat two players ranked in the World Tennis Association’s Top 5 in the US Open. Serena Williams previously held the record when she did this in 1999. Fernandez also became the youngest US Open semifinalist since Maria Sharapova.
I still can’t understand the scoring system of tennis. It’s not that I don’t know how their scoring system is all about… but I just don’t really care about the sport. Not badmouthing tennis but when I was young during the early to mid-90s, I used to get punished by watching full matches on TV instead of cartoons. Sure, Felix Barrientos did awesome back then and I might really care about the best moves of Steffi Graf, Pete Sampras, and Andre Agassi.
I just feel that the sport is boring.
I mean… going from zero to sixty to one and then zero to sixty to two with the scorching heat of the sun?
Also, I have stepped inside a tennis court and it’s not that reassuring.
I like badminton though.
I have a Sharapova Funko pop but I just thought of it as an investment.
Anyway, the 19-year-old Filipino Canadian is going to have a nice career if whether or not she wins the tournament. It’s just a shame that she is representing Canada. I mean… I get that the Philippines hasn’t been that good to athletes these past administrations but in light of the Tokyo Olympics in which Hidilyn Diaz, Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam, and Eumir Marcial led a contingent of rewards and bonuses, I guess it’s high time for the athletes to come back and get their dues.
Fernandez is in fact, an investment… especially with her capacity to take down the queens of her division.
