For almost a decade, I have been following the career of Calvin Abueva.
Here is this volatile "creature" from Pampanga, tearing the NCAA up as an undersized forward that can dunk, bang bodies, crash the paint, look for the open man, and piss the hell out of his opponents. He is also part of a big-time faction of Pampanga players in Baste called the Pinatubo Trio. Ronald Pascual's PBA career may have failed to pan out but at least Abueva and Ian Sangalang are tearing it up to the next level.
Me likey.
I thought after finishing his season with the San Sebastian Stags, Abueva will have some sort of "summoning sickness" when he goes to the PBA.
The dude made the league his playground as part of the Alaska Aces.
Now, yeah. Demons had messed up his career. He is also one of those players alongside Jayson Castro, Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, Ranidel De Ocampo, and Terrence Romeo to never win the big individual prize because they were all in the shadow of June Mar F'N Fajardo. Abueva gained second professional life with the Phoenix Fuel Masters and when he transitioned to the Magnolia Hotshots, Abueva is again on the verge of winning the MVP award.
