It's interesting to note that there are only two teams that haven't scored a top pick.
The Oklahoma City Thunder has yet to score a top pick... even during their days as the Seattle Supersonics - a team that has been in the NBA since 1967. In fact, the most recent #2 pick they got is Kevin Durant.
If you check out the chart - you'll see that the 2007 NBA Draft is featured twice. This is the year Portland selected Greg Oden as the top pick and Durant came in second.
The only way you can associate Seattle or Oklahoma in the top pick conversation is through the picks' colleges with 1958 top pick Elgin Baylor playing for the Seattle Redhawks, 2009 top pick Blake Griffin attending the Oklahoma Sooners, and most recently, Cade Cunningham going one-and-done with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
Also, this is the first time since 1989 that the Indiana Pacers drew a single-digit pick. In that year, Rik Smith was taken second overall with George McCloud coming in at seventh. Since then, the Pacers have had two number 10 picks and they used it on Erick Dampier in 1996 and Paul George in 2010.
Of course, the Orlando Magic got the best in the draft as they are going to get the top spot for the fourth time in their history. Coincidentally, the player they'll get will probably have a hell of a career since their three picks were Shaquille O'Neal in 1992, Chris Webber in 1993, and Dwight Howard in 2004. Shaq became an MVP with C-Webb and The Daily Double claiming All-NBA selections.
The Cleveland Cavaliers hold the record for most top picks with six. Austin Carr started things off in 1971, then Brad Daugherty in 1986, of course, LeBron James in 2003, then Kyrie Irving in 2011, then Anthony Bennett in 2013, and then Andrew Wiggins to finish things off in 2014.
The Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Utah Jazz, and Denver Nuggets join the Thunder and the Pacers as teams to never select a top pick. In some ways, this is both good and bad especially since 1985, teams with the least wins, gain an advantage for the top spot.
Of the six teams, only Miami has won a title and it's interesting to note that Denver's two-time MVP, Nikola Jokic, is the 41st player selected in the 2012 NBA Draft.
